The Apples in Stereo - High Tide

The Apples in Stereo came from Colorado and were part of the Elephant 6 collective - a label/association/whatever I've always had some reservations about. Too often, the Elephants' psychedelic pop seemed to be more about attitude than songs, and they came across rather smug and irritating. Even when they were good.

The Apples' debut album, 1995's Fun Trick Noisemaker, fell (mostly) into the "good" category and is certainly one I would recommend if you're curious about Elephant 6. But I wouldn't call any of it indispensable.

Poole - Strawberry Kool-Aid Smile

Well it took a couple days to get this up but I think you'll agree it was worth it :)

Don't know much about this Washington DC-area band but their 1995 debut album Alaska Days is full of joyous, summery pop tunes (title and cover art notwithstanding!). I didn't really want this particular track to be my favourite because let's face it, it may have just about the cheesiest name ever. But the song itself is pretty close to irresistible.

Lilys - Ginger

Lilys have made a couple appearances on this blog already but they definitely deserve another one for this, an utterly fabulous bit of shoegazey bubble gum from 1994. The kind of song that reminds you why you fell in love with pop music in general, and indiepop in particular, in the first place.
